She has described the album as being written from a place of “unfiltered rage”, with tracks including Oh Well, Petal and Like I Do tackling heartbreak, media scrutiny and the pressures of fame. While the record explores familiar themes of love and loss, it also sees Grande experiment with dreamy, downtempo production and a more intimate vocal style, created primarily alongside longtime collaborator Ilya Salmanzadeh, with additional contributions from Max Martin.

Following the success of 2024’s Eternal Sunshine and her recent focus on the Wicked films, Petal marks a confident return to music. The album’s final tracks shift from anger to hope, reflecting on healing, new relationships and personal growth.

Critics have praised Petal for its emotional honesty, fearless attitude and willingness to push Ariana Grande’s sound in a fresh direction, with many calling it one of her most authentic and compelling releases to date.
