Anthony Joshua: Boxing Superstardom
British boxing is in the midst of a golden period, blessed with a galaxy of stars and current champions in its ranks across various divisions and among those, one man has captured the imagination of the Great British public like no other – Anthony Joshua.
The stunning stoppage of American champion Charles Martin earlier in 2016 saw AJ become the new IBF heavyweight champion, marking him out as boxing’s rising star and announcing himself on the world stage as the man to beat.
A blockbuster bout at Wembley Stadium saw Anthony Joshua’s stock skyrocket, having survived a knockdown to overcome Ukranian legend Wladimir Klitschko in an epic heavyweight bout at Wembley Stadium in front of over 90,000 boxing fans.
Next up for AJ was a mandatory defence of his IBF heavyweight belt against Kubrat Pulev. The Bulgarian pulled out through injury in the build up to the fight, so Carlos Takam stepped in to face Joshua, with both men putting on a rousing display in front of a huge crowd at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff before the 10th round stoppage handed Joshua the victory.
Joshua’s incredible rise to the top of the heavyweight scene saw him face New Zealand’s Joseph Parker back at the Principality Stadium. AJ switched from his usual big punching style, instead displaying a tactical boxing masterclass, keeping his opponent at bay with his long powerful jab throughout to overcome the Kiwi on points.
AJ faced Russia’s Alexandr Povetkin back in London at a packed Wembley Stadium, where he dismantled the Russian challenger to maintain his unbeaten record.
Joshua suffered a shock first defeat at the hands of Mexico’s Andy Ruiz Jr. in New York, losing his status as the one to beat in the heavyweight division.
Since then, AJ emerged triumphant from the Anthony Joshua v Andy Ruiz 2 rematch billed the Clash on the Dunes in Saudi Arabia, reclaiming his title belts.
Anthony Joshua can now continue his quest to unify this dangerous heavyweight division.
