Borussia Dortmund

Road To The UEFA Champions League Final

Borussia Dortmund produced a masterclass away performance to defeat Paris St-Germain and secure their first Champions League final since 2013. Holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg, Dortmund doubled their advantage when Mats Hummels headed in from Julian Brandt’s corner, shortly after PSG’s Warren Zaire-Emery missed a key opportunity by hitting the post. Despite PSG hitting the woodwork multiple times, Dortmund’s defense, led by Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck, remained resolute. Kylian Mbappe, playing his final European match for PSG before his move to Real Madrid, saw his effort deflected onto the crossbar. Dortmund’s exceptional defensive display frustrated PSG, who were denied a potential lifeline when the referee reversed a penalty decision. The victory at Parc des Princes, coupled with their strong group stage and knockout performances, highlighted Dortmund’s resilience and determination. They now aim for their second European title, with the final set for Wembley on June 1st, potentially against Bayern Munich, reminiscent of the 2013 all-German final.

Key Players

Borussia Dortmund’s journey to the UEFA Champions League final has been driven by key players’ standout performances. Marco Reus scored nine goals in 41 appearances, while Julian Brandt added 10 goals and two assists in 46 matches. Marcel Sabitzer contributed six goals, and Jadon Sancho, on loan from Manchester United, provided three crucial goals. In attack, Niclas Füllkrug and Donyell Malen each netted 15 goals, proving vital to the team’s success. Emre Can’s robust presence in midfield with 37 appearances ensured defensive solidity. This collective effort has been fundamental to Dortmund’s successful campaign, culminating in their place in the Champions League final.

Best UCL Moments

Borussia Dortmund has established itself as a constant participant in the UEFA Champions League, earning a reputation as a German powerhouse. Fans across Europe experience the electrifying atmosphere of playing in front of ‘The Yellow Wall’ each season. Dortmund’s history in the UCL is filled with memorable moments, highlighting their resilience and talent.

The club’s greatest triumph came in the 1996/1997 season when they secured their first and only UCL title by defeating Juventus 3-1 in the final. Karl-Heinz Riedle’s quick brace in the first half and Lars Ricken’s iconic long-range goal in the second half sealed their victory, etching the match into the annals of football history.

Another unforgettable moment was their dramatic comeback against Malaga in the 2012/2013 quarterfinals. After a goalless draw in the first leg and trailing in the second leg, Dortmund needed two goals in the dying minutes. Marco Reus and Felipe Santana delivered, propelling BVB to the semifinals in one of the most thrilling finishes in UCL history.

In the 1997/1998 season, Dortmund faced their rivals Bayern Munich in the semifinals. After a goalless first leg, the match seemed destined for extra time until Stephane Chapuisat’s late goal secured Dortmund’s place in the final, creating another cherished memory for their fans.

These moments, among many others, showcase Borussia Dortmund’s enduring spirit and significant presence in the UEFA Champions League, reinforcing their status as one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Real Madrid

Road To The UEFA Champions League Final

Real Madrid’s path to the UEFA Champions League final was marked by a dramatic comeback against Bayern Munich. Joselu emerged as the hero with a stunning late double that turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory, securing a 4-3 aggregate win. Bayern, led by Thomas Tuchel, appeared to be on their way to the final with Alphonso Davies’ second-half goal until Manuel Neuer’s rare mistake allowed Joselu to equalize in the 88th minute. As tension mounted at the Santiago Bernabeu, Joselu then converted Antonio Rudiger’s cross in the 91st minute, a goal that was confirmed after a VAR review. The victory exemplified Real Madrid’s never-say-die mentality, a trait that has defined many of their European campaigns. The win not only highlighted the squad’s depth and resilience but also set up a thrilling final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, leaving Bayern’s Harry Kane without silverware in his first season in Germany.

Key Players

Real Madrid’s key players have been instrumental in their journey to the UEFA Champions League final. Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Júnior have been standout performers, each scoring 23 goals and providing crucial assists. Experienced midfielders Toni Kroos and Luka Modric have offered stability, while Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga have bolstered the defense and midfield with solid performances. Joselu has been a revelation with 18 goals in 18 starts, and Rodrygo has added 17 goals, enhancing the team’s attacking prowess. These players, alongside contributions from Brahim Diaz and others, have epitomized Real Madrid’s depth and resilience, propelling them to yet another final under Carlo Ancelotti.

Real Madrid’s storied history in the UEFA Champions League is adorned with moments of sheer brilliance and unparalleled dominance, defining them as one of Europe’s most formidable clubs. With a staggering 14 titles under their belt, their journey to the pinnacle of European football has been nothing short of spectacular. From their inaugural triumph in 1956 to their recent conquest in 2022 against Liverpool, each victory has left an indelible mark on football history.
