Championship Play Offs Extended from 2026-27
Play Offs Extended from 2026-27
Big changes are coming to the Sky Bet Championship as The EFL has approved expanding the play-offs from four to six teams, giving more clubs a shot at the Premier League. From 2026–27, teams finishing third to eighth will compete for promotion.
The new format: third and fourth go straight to the semis, while fifth hosts eighth and sixth hosts seventh in a one-off quarter-final. Semi-finals stay two-legged, and the final remains at Wembley Stadium in May.
The change is designed to strengthen the Championship and add more drama to the closing stages of the season. League One and League Two play-offs aren’t changing… yet.
Fans and clubs alike can expect more suspense, more excitement, and more golden-ticket dreams in the years ahead.
