Artist Bio
Born the third out of six children, Andre Leon Marie Nichloas Rieu was born in Maastricht, Netherlands in 1949. Being brought up in a musical family, with his father being the conductor of the Maastricht Symphony Orchestra, Andre began playing the violin when he was just 5 years old.
Andre Rieu formed his Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987 and went on to go on their first concert in the successive year. In 1994, he released his debut album with the Orchestra ‘From Holland With Love’ that reached number one in The Netherlands for an entire year.
In his 60th year, Andre Rieu’s ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ achieved an impressive feat, reaching the second spot on the Australian charts in 2009. He has been the highest-selling music artist in Australia for the past 5 years and showing his reputation as one of the most popular classical artists there.
The subsequent year marked another triumph as the maestro sold over 400,000 copies with his inaugural UK release, surpassing the 1 million sales mark within just a year. Additionally, he etched his name in UK chart history by securing the highest position for a classical album this century.
