Early Years
Green Day formed in Northern California’s underground punk scene, founded by childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt. Originally called Sweet Children, the band became Green Day in 1989 and released their debut EP 1000 Hours. After early releases 39/Smooth and Slappy, they signed to Lookout! Records and issued 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. Drummer Tré Cool soon joined, completing the band’s core lineup.
Rise To Stardom
A growing cult following led to 1992’s Kerplunk!, attracting major-label interest and a deal with Reprise. Their 1994 debut Dookie became a global breakthrough, driven by hits like “Longview,” “Basket Case,” and “When I Come Around,” plus a defining Woodstock ’94 performance. The album sold over 15 million copies worldwide and won a Grammy. Follow-ups Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning cemented their mainstream success through the late ’90s.
Global Success
Green Day reached new heights with 2004’s American Idiot, a chart-topping, multi-Grammy-winning rock opera that became their most acclaimed work. Continued success followed with 21st Century Breakdown, Hall of Fame induction in 2015, and chart-toppers like Revolution Radio. Despite setbacks and experimentation in the 2010s, the band returned strongly with Saviors in 2024, reaffirming their status as one of punk rock’s most enduring global acts.
