Early Years
Larry Mullen, Jr. sparked U2’s formation with a simple notice on a high school bulletin board, attracting Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Dick Evans. Originally called the Feedback and later the Hype, the band settled on the name U2 after Evans left. These formative years laid the foundation for their sound and identity.
Rise To Stardom
U2 gained early recognition by winning a high school talent contest in 1978, catching the eye of manager Paul McGuinness. Their debut EP U2 Three topped the Irish charts in 1979, followed by the release of Boy in 1980 and October in 1981, which brought them into the British charts. Hits like “I Will Follow” and “Gloria” soon made them MTV favorites, establishing their presence in the United States.
Global Success
Collaborations with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois led to The Unforgettable Fire (1984), featuring hits like “(Pride) In the Name of Love,” and their breakthrough album The Joshua Tree (1987) produced global chart-toppers including “With or Without You.” Decades later, U2 continues to innovate with releases like Songs of Surrender and “Atomic City,” showcasing their lasting influence.
