Stephen Fleming appointed England Test coach as Joe Root returns as captain

England have appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as their new Test head coach, with Joe Root returning as England Test captain ahead of a new era for the side.

Fleming replaces Brendon McCullum, who was dismissed from the Test role earlier this month following a disappointing run of results, but remains in charge of England’s white-ball teams.

Root, who captained England between 2017 and 2022, returns to the role following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket in June. Fleming, a five-time Indian Premier League-winning coach with Chennai Super Kings, will officially take charge ahead of England’s Test tour of South Africa later this year.
