Dua Lipa - Pyramid Stage - Friday 28 June 2024

Dua Lipa’s headline performance at Glastonbury showcased her meticulous planning and deep understanding of the festival’s dynamics. Despite initial doubts after her latest album, Radical Optimism, received mixed reviews, Lipa delivered a visually spectacular show filled with her hits like “New Rules” and collaborations such as “Cold Heart” with Elton John. Featuring confetti cannons, pyrotechnics, and a nod to Glastonbury’s hedonistic spirit, the performance was complemented by guest appearances including Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. Despite a couple of less impactful tracks from her new album, Lipa seamlessly integrated them into a set that captivated the audience, ensuring her Glastonbury headline debut was a resounding success.

Dua Lipa’s career saw significant tours in 2017 and 2022. The 2017 tour, starting with a European leg on May 12, expanded to North and South America due to high demand, selling out quickly and necessitating venue upgrades. Boosted by the success of “New Rules,” more UK dates were added, followed by an Australian leg confirmed in October. The tour’s final show in Stockholm, rescheduled but held in a larger venue, shifted its endpoint to Sweden. In 2022, the Future Nostalgia Tour reaffirmed Dua Lipa’s success, ranking 18th globally with $89,302,575 in earnings from 71 shows.

SZA - Pyramid Stage - Sunday 30 June 2024

After Dua Lipa and Coldplay delivered polished performances, SZA faced a challenging task as Glastonbury’s Sunday night headliner. Originally rumored to feature Madonna, the slot instead went to US R&B star SZA, known for her introspective songs on modern relationships. Despite her vocal prowess and visual spectacle, including a three-part stage journey, SZA struggled to captivate a sizable audience at the Pyramid Stage. Technical issues with her microphone marred the opening, and her set, while emotionally resonant, failed to engage the crowd fully. Highlights like “Nobody Gets Me” showcased her vulnerability, but by the time she reached her biggest hit, “Kill Bill,” many had drifted away to other performances. Despite these challenges, SZA’s performance was praised for its vocal command and heartfelt moments, even if it didn’t quite match the festival’s high expectations.

SZA’s concert tours have been defining moments in her career. The “Ctrl Tour” (August 16 to December 17, 2017) marked her debut, showcasing intimate performances across North America and Europe that solidified her reputation as a powerful live performer in R&B and soul. Following the success of Ctrl, her “SOS Tour” (November 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023), her second and first arena tour, grossed $57 million with 420,000 attendees across 32 shows. Billboard credited the “SOS Tour’s” success to anticipation from Ctrl and highlighted sold-out shows in New York City and Inglewood as milestones in her growing influence on the music scene.
