#2: Use Your Illusion II (1991)
Use Your Illusion II, the fourth studio album by Guns N’ Roses, solidified the band’s dominance in hard rock with its September 17, 1991, release, alongside Use Your Illusion I. Both albums were launched in tandem with the band’s expansive Use Your Illusion Tour, but Use Your Illusion II emerged as the more popular of the two, driven by the powerful lead single “You Could Be Mine.” It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 770,000 copies in its first week—outpacing its counterpart.
By 2010, it had sold over 5.5 million units in the U.S. alone, and both albums received 7× Platinum certification from the RIAA. Use Your Illusion II also reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and marked the end of an era for the band, as it was the final album to credit rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin and features “Civil War,” the last track with drummer Steven Adler. This album, along with Use Your Illusion I, was the last to include new original material until 2008’s Chinese Democracy.
