Hull City promoted to Premier League

Hull City promoted to Premier League

The Championship play-off final returned to Wembley Stadium in May 2026 with Hull City and Middlesbrough competing for the final promotion place to the Premier League.

Look forward to a series of exciting matchups as the 2026 – 2027 Premier League season awaits with official football hospitality packages.

McBurnie Fires Tigers to Promotion

Hull City secured promotion back to the Premier League after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

The decisive moment came in stoppage time when Oli McBurnie reacted quickest inside the penalty area after Yu Hirakawa’s cross caused problems for the Middlesbrough defence. The striker bundled home from close range to send the Hull fans into celebration.

Hull Complete Remarkable Rise

The win completed an incredible turnaround for Hull City, who only narrowly avoided relegation to League One last season.

Head coach Sergej Jakirović guided the Tigers back to the top flight in his first season in English football, despite the club operating under a transfer embargo throughout the campaign.

Hull defended strongly throughout the match and made their late chance count in front of more than 84,000 supporters at Wembley.

Middlesbrough Fall Short at Wembley

Middlesbrough saw large spells of possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Hull side in difficult conditions.

Boro had originally missed out in the play-off semi-finals before being reinstated into the final after Southampton were expelled from the competition earlier in the week.

Despite a strong effort, Middlesbrough were unable to find an equaliser after McBurnie’s dramatic late goal.
