#3: On The 6 (1999)

“On the 6,” Jennifer Lopez’s debut studio album, was released on June 1, 1999, by the Work Group. Featuring producers like Rodney Jerkins, Cory Rooney, Dan Shea, and Sean “Puffy” Combs, it blends Latin, pop, and R&B styles. The album was praised for its dynamic musical style and Lopez’s versatile, seductive vocals, though some critics found her singing underwhelming. It reached the top ten or twenty in several countries and was certified triple platinum in the US. “On the 6” produced five singles, including the chart-topping “If You Had My Love” and the top-ten hit “Waiting for Tonight.” The album played a key role in the “Latin explosion” in Western pop music. Lopez released a 25th-anniversary digital reissue on May 31, 2024.

#2: This Is Me Then (2002)

“This Is Me… Then,” Jennifer Lopez’s third studio album, was released on November 25, 2002, by Epic Records. Inspired by her relationship with Ben Affleck, the album features a shift from dance-pop to R&B and soul, influenced by artists like Michael Jackson and Luther Vandross. Produced by Cory Rooney, Troy Oliver, and Dan Shea, it received mixed reviews for its musical direction and production quality but achieved commercial success, reaching number two in the US and selling over 6 million copies worldwide. The lead single, “Jenny from the Block,” featuring Styles P and Jadakiss, became a signature song for Lopez, while “All I Have,” featuring LL Cool J, became her fourth number-one single in the US. Despite controversy over its music video, “I’m Glad” was moderately successful, and the album’s fourth single was “Baby I Love U!” To mark its 20th anniversary, Lopez announced a sequel album titled “This Is Me… Now,” scheduled for release in 2024.

#1: J.Lo (2001)

“J.Lo,” Jennifer Lopez’s second studio album, arrived on January 23, 2001, under Epic Records. Produced by Cory Rooney, Troy Oliver, Dan Shea, and Sean Combs, the album seamlessly merges dance-pop, Latin, and R&B influences, incorporating elements of Latin pop and both retro and contemporary styles. Despite drawing mixed reviews for its manufactured sound, “J.Lo” debuted impressively at number one on the US Billboard 200, coinciding with the success of her film “The Wedding Planner.” It achieved quadruple platinum status in the US, marking it as her top-selling album and one of the year’s best globally.

The album’s lead single, “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” released on November 20, 2000, soared to number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and clinched the top spot on the UK Singles Chart. “Play,” the follow-up single, achieved international acclaim, peaking at number three in the UK. “I’m Real,” dropped on June 19, 2001, gained additional traction with a remix featuring Ja Rule, pivoting Lopez’s musical style toward hip hop and urban sounds, ultimately topping the US charts. Closing out with “Ain’t It Funny,” released on June 20, 2001, the album maintained its momentum. “J.Lo” has since sold over 8 million copies worldwide, underscoring Lopez’s impact across both pop and urban music landscapes.
