Lionesses v Italy Women Match Review
Reigning champions England staged yet another stunning comeback to book their place in the Euro 2025 final, defeating Italy 2-1 after extra time in Geneva. In a match packed with tension and drama, it was the Lionesses’ never-say-die attitude — and their inspired substitutes — that once again stole the spotlight.
Italy took a surprise lead in the first half through veteran forward Barbara Bonansea, punishing England’s sluggish start. Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Sarina Wiegman’s side found themselves on the brink of elimination deep into stoppage time. But teenage sensation Michelle Agyemang, only introduced late on, drilled home a composed equaliser in the 96th minute to keep England’s hopes alive.
As the game stretched into extra time, it was Chloe Kelly — the hero of the Euro 2022 final — who once again delivered when it mattered most. After seeing her penalty saved in the 119th minute, Kelly reacted quickest to smash in the rebound and spark wild celebrations on the England bench.
Agyemang’s breakout tournament continues to impress, with the 19-year-old now boasting two goals from the bench in her first senior Euros. Alongside her, Kelly reinforced her reputation as Wiegman’s ultimate impact player, while defender Esme Morgan impressed after stepping into the starting lineup.
It was heartbreak for Italy, who were competing in their first Euro semi-final since 1997. Andrea Soncin’s side defied expectations throughout the tournament and came agonisingly close to a historic final appearance. Their spirited run may have ended in defeat, but they exit with pride after their strongest Euros performance in 18 years.

When are the Lionesses back at Wembley?
The Lionesses will return to Wembley Stadium on 29 November 2025 to face Asian champions China in a highly anticipated international clash. It will be their first appearance at Wembley since lifting the Euro 2025 trophy with a dramatic penalty shootout win over Spain. This match marks the sixth meeting between England and China, following the Lionesses’ dominant 6-1 victory at the 2023 World Cup. As preparations begin for the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, head coach Sarina Wiegman sees the game as a valuable test against top non-European opposition and a fitting end to a historic year for England.
