The Manchester Derby has its roots in a match played on November 12, 1881, when St. Mark’s (West Gorton), later known as Manchester City, faced Newton Heath LYR, who would become Manchester United. Newton Heath won the match 3-0, but at the time, it was simply a game between two emerging teams in Manchester. As the clubs grew in prominence, their rivalry deepened, with both teams becoming dominant forces in the local football scene by the late 19th century.

Their first Football League encounter came in the 1894-95 season, where Newton Heath triumphed 5-2. Over the decades, the derby has evolved into one of the most fiercely contested fixtures in English football, symbolizing the shifting balance of power in Manchester. While United historically dominated, City’s resurgence in recent years has added a new dynamic to this storied rivalry.
