Held at either Anfield or Goodison Park, this derby is renowned for its electric atmosphere, deep-rooted history, and the intense rivalry that divides the city of Liverpool. As two of the Premier League’s most storied clubs, Liverpool and Everton bring their best to this annual showdown, making the Merseyside Derby a must-watch spectacle for football fans around the world.

Merseyside Derby History

Everton FC, founded in 1878, initially played at Anfield, owned by chairman John Houlding. Disputes between Houlding, a Conservative and brewer, and Everton’s predominantly Liberal board led to a split in 1892. The Everton board moved to Goodison Park, while Houlding established Liverpool FC at Anfield. Less than a mile separates Anfield and Goodison Park, but this proximity has only heightened the rivalry, which, despite being dubbed the “friendly derby” in the 1980s, has become increasingly bitter and hostile.

Historically, Everton was the dominant team in Liverpool until Liverpool’s resurgence in the 1960s under Bill Shankly. The two clubs have contested numerous EPL titles and FA Cups, though Everton hasn’t won a major trophy since 1995. Currently, Liverpool is the superior team, as reflected in EPL betting odds. Nevertheless, the rivalry remains intense, with Everton portraying itself as a “People’s Club” in contrast to Liverpool’s global reach, highlighting the ongoing rancor between these two storied clubs.
