New UEFA Champions League Format
New UEFA Champions League Format
The UEFA Champions League is undergoing a significant overhaul for the 2024/25 season. The number of participating teams will increase from 32 to 36, and the traditional group stage is being replaced by a new league phase. This means more matches, with the total rising from 125 to 189. Each team will now play eight league-phase matches, facing eight different opponents—four home and four away—compared to the previous format of six games against three teams.
How It Works
In the new format, all 36 teams will be ranked together in a single league. The top eight teams will advance directly to the Round of 16, while the teams ranked 9th to 24th will compete in a two-legged playoff to secure their place in the knockout stage. Teams finishing 25th or lower will be eliminated. The league phase will now run until the end of January, extending the competition period and ensuring more high-profile matches.
Qualification and Allocation
The extra four spots in the Champions League will be allocated as follows: one to the third-place team in the fifth-ranked association, one to a domestic champion through an expanded qualifying process, and two based on the best collective performance by clubs from top-performing associations. The new structure ensures that more teams have a chance to compete at the highest level of European football.
Impact On The Schedule
With the new format, the Champions League will feature dedicated weeks where no other UEFA club competitions are scheduled. This change aims to maximize focus on the Champions League matches, which will now be played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The league phase will conclude in January, with the knockout stages beginning in February and culminating in the final, which will be held at Munich’s Allianz Arena on May 31, 2025.
