Premier League 2024-25 GW11 Review
Chelsea 1 - 1 Arsenal
Arsenal’s winless run extended to four matches after a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Gunners, trailing 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, looked set to claim all three points when Gabriel Martinelli put them ahead on the hour-mark, thanks to a brilliant assist from captain Martin Ødegaard. However, Chelsea responded 10 minutes later with Pedro Neto’s well-placed strike to level the game.
Despite a late opportunity for Leandro Trossard, who missed from close range in stoppage time, Arsenal were unable to find a winner. Chelsea, who remain unbeaten against teams outside the top three, battled well to earn a point.
Arsenal, now fourth, have failed to win in four league games, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side with a lot of work to do to stay in the title race. Chelsea, while still defensively shaky, showed resilience and earned a deserved point, with hopes of building momentum in the coming weeks.
Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 2 Ipswich Town
Ipswich started strong with Szmodics forcing a save early on and Delap hitting the crossbar from a corner. Szmodics’ acrobatic finish gave Ipswich the lead, and Delap capitalized on a rebound to score their second. Tottenham had a goal ruled out for handball early in the second half, and Bentancur’s header wasn’t enough to mount a full comeback.
The win marks Ipswich’s first Premier League victory since April 2002, lifting them to 17th in the table. Manager Kieran McKenna will be hoping the result will spark their season as they prepare for an upcoming match against Manchester United. Tottenham, meanwhile, struggled to recover from a midweek defeat in the Europa League and remain in 10th place, with concerns about their form under manager Ange Postecoglou.
Nottingham Forest 3 - 1 Newcastle
Newcastle United secured a 3-1 win at the City Ground, extending their strong record against Nottingham Forest with a dominant second-half display. Despite going behind to a 21st-minute header from Murillo, Newcastle equalized early in the second half through Alexander Isak, who scored for the fourth consecutive match. Isak then turned provider, setting up Joelinton to curl in a brilliant strike, before Harvey Barnes sealed the victory with a late breakaway goal.
Forest, who had been on a three-match winning streak, struggled to cope with Newcastle’s counter-attacks after the equalizer. This loss marks the beginning of a challenging run for Forest, facing several top-eight teams. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side, fresh from a win over Arsenal, showed improvement with a well-balanced performance, taking advantage of Forest’s defensive vulnerabilities. The result lifts Newcastle to within a point of Forest, who drop to fifth in the table.
Manchester United 3 - 0 Leicester City
Bruno Fernandes starred in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City, marking his 250th appearance for the club with a hand in all three goals. Fernandes opened the scoring early on, before his delivery forced Leicester’s Victor Kristiansen into an own goal. Substitute Alejandro Garnacho sealed the win late with a brilliant strike, ensuring United returned to winning ways ahead of new head coach Ruben Amorim’s arrival.
United dominated the first half, with Fernandes scoring after Amad Diallo’s assist, while Leicester’s best chance came through Wilfred Ndidi, but Andre Onana made a key save. Kristiansen’s own goal compounded Leicester’s misfortune, while Hermansen kept them in the game with crucial saves before the break. Leicester pressed in the second half, with Jordan Ayew coming close, but Onana denied him again. Garnacho’s late goal wrapped up a comfortable victory for the hosts.
This result lifts United to 15 points but leaves them in 13th, while Leicester remain on 10 points in 15th. For United, Van Nistelrooy’s interim tenure ends on a high, with signs of attacking improvement under his guidance. Amorim will take charge of the next match, looking to build on a positive performance, though United will feel they could have scored more. Leicester, missing Jamie Vardy, couldn’t break down a solid United defense and failed to score for the first time this season
Liverpool 2 - 0 Aston Villa
Liverpool took full advantage of Manchester City’s shock loss to Brighton, beating Aston Villa 2-0 at Anfield to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League.
The Reds struck early with Darwin Nunez’s clinical finish following a counter-attack, set up by Mohamed Salah after Villa’s corner. Despite some early pressure from Villa, including a penalty shout for Ollie Watkins, Liverpool’s defense held firm.
Salah sealed the win late on with a breakaway goal, ensuring Liverpool extended their impressive run to 15 wins in 17 matches across all competitions.
Villa, on a four-match losing streak, remain in eighth as Unai Emery’s side struggles to find form. For Liverpool, it’s a significant step towards a potential title challenge under Arne Slot.
Brighton 2 - 1 Manchester City
Premier League debutant Matt O’Riley came off the bench to seal a dramatic 2-1 win for Brighton over Manchester City at the Amex Stadium, condemning Pep Guardiola to his first-ever four-game losing streak as a manager.
City had taken the lead in the first half through Erling Haaland, who followed up his own shot to score. Brighton responded strongly in the second half, with Joao Pedro equalizing in the 78th minute after a scramble in the box. O’Riley then struck five minutes later, finishing calmly past Ederson to complete the turnaround.
The victory lifts Brighton to fourth in the table, while City, sitting second, missed the chance to go top and now trail Liverpool by two points
Wolves 2 - 0 Southampton
Wolverhampton Wanderers secured their first Premier League win of the season, beating Southampton 2-0 at Molineux to move off the bottom of the table.
Pablo Sarabia gave Wolves the perfect start, scoring the fastest-ever Premier League goal for the club just 1 minute and 48 seconds in. Southampton thought they had equalized through Ryan Manning, but his goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a foul in the build-up. Matheus Cunha sealed the win with a stunning 25-yard strike early in the second half.
The result lifts Wolves to 18th, with six points, while Southampton slip to the bottom with just four points from 11 matches.
West Ham 0 - 0 Everton
Jordan Pickford was the star of the show as Everton held West Ham United to a 0-0 draw at London Stadium. The England goalkeeper made a crucial fingertip save in stoppage time to deny substitute Danny Ings the winner, preserving a point for his side.
West Ham had the better of the chances, with Crysencio Summerville hitting the post and Ings testing Pickford late on. Despite a strong second-half performance from the Hammers, including a fine save from Lukasz Fabianski to deny Jesper Lindstrom, Everton also had their moments but couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.
The draw leaves West Ham in 14th and Everton two places behind them in the table.
Crystal Palace 0 - 2 Fulham
Fulham secured a 2-0 win over 10-man Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, with Emile Smith Rowe and Harry Wilson finding the back of the net. Smith Rowe’s goal on the stroke of halftime broke the deadlock, finishing Raul Jimenez’s pass after a defensive error.
Smith Rowe had a second goal ruled out for offside early in the second half, and Palace’s hopes were further dashed when Daichi Kamada was sent off for a poor challenge. Wilson sealed the win with a strike seven minutes from time, though his injury-time goal was disallowed.
The result propelled Fulham into sixth, while Palace’s unbeaten run was halted, leaving them in 17th place.
Brentford 3 - 2 Bournemouth
Yoane Wissa’s two goals helped Brentford come from behind twice to defeat AFC Bournemouth 3-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Bournemouth took the lead early after a mistake by Brentford’s Sepp van den Berg, with Evanilson capitalizing. Wissa equalized with a header, and after Bournemouth regained the lead through Justin Kluivert, Mikkel Damsgaard quickly leveled for the Bees. Wissa netted the winner in the 58th minute, lifting Brentford to victory despite a late scare when Bournemouth’s Enes Unal hit the crossbar.
The win moves Brentford into 10th place on 16 points, leapfrogging Bournemouth, who remain just behind on goal difference.
