Premier League 2024-25 GW16 Review
Bournemouth 1 - 1 West Ham
AFC Bournemouth rescued a late 1-1 draw against West Ham United at Vitality Stadium, courtesy of Enes Unal’s spectacular 90th-minute free-kick.
The Cherries looked set for disappointment after Lucas Paqueta calmly converted an 87th-minute penalty, awarded following a VAR review for a handball by Tyler Adams. Earlier, Bournemouth had been frustrated by a string of brilliant saves from Lukasz Fabianski, who denied several goal-bound efforts, including attempts from Evanilson and Ryan Christie.
However, with time running out, substitute Unal curled an unstoppable free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards, salvaging a point and extending Bournemouth’s unbeaten run to four games.
The draw moves Bournemouth to sixth in the Premier League table with 25 points, while West Ham remain 14th with 19 points. Next, the Cherries travel to Old Trafford as they continue their impressive push for a top-four finish.
Brighton 1 - 3 Crystal Palace
Ismaila Sarr’s brilliant brace helped Crystal Palace secure a crucial 3-1 win over rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, lifting them four points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
Trevoh Chalobah opened the scoring in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a deflected corner to fire home from close range. Moments later, Sarr doubled Palace’s lead with a powerful header from Tyrick Mitchell’s pinpoint cross.
Brighton dominated much of the second half but found Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson in inspired form, denying key efforts from Julio Enciso and Lewis Dunk. Palace sealed the result on the counter-attack as Sarr raced clear to slot home his second in the 82nd minute.
A late own goal by Marc Guehi offered Brighton a consolation, but the Seagulls were unable to avoid their first home defeat of the season. The win moves Palace up to 15th, while Brighton slip to ninth.
The Eagles now turn their attention to a tough run of fixtures against Arsenal in both the EFL Cup and Premier League.
Manchester City 1 - 2 Manchester United
Amad was the hero for Manchester United as they staged a stunning late turnaround to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City in a fiercely contested derby at the Etihad Stadium.
City took the lead in the 36th minute when Josko Gvardiol’s powerful header found the back of the net following a deflected Kevin De Bruyne cross. However, Pep Guardiola’s side failed to capitalize on their advantage, opening the door for a resurgent United.
Amad, pivotal in United’s revival, won a penalty in the 88th minute after being fouled by Matheus Nunes. Bruno Fernandes stepped up to convert, bringing the game level. Just minutes later, Amad latched onto Lisandro Martinez’s long ball, showcasing composure to beat Ederson and seal a memorable win for Ruben Amorim’s side.
The victory lifted United to 12th in the Premier League, snapping a two-game losing streak and cutting City’s lead over them to just five points. City remain fifth, now nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
United’s focus now shifts to an EFL Cup quarter-final clash with Tottenham Hotspur, with silverware in sight.
Chelsea 2 - 1 Brentford
Chelsea secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brentford at Stamford Bridge, marking their fifth consecutive Premier League victory and moving within two points of leaders Liverpool. Marc Cucurella opened the scoring with a header from Noni Madueke’s cross just before halftime, while Nicolas Jackson added a crucial second late on after missing an earlier chance.
Brentford, who hit the crossbar through Fabio Carvalho and forced key saves from Robert Sanchez, pulled one back in the final minutes through Bryan Mbeumo, but it wasn’t enough to deny Chelsea the win.
Enzo Maresca’s side, now firmly in the title conversation, benefited from standout performances by Jadon Sancho, Cole Palmer, and Madueke. They next face Shamrock Rovers in the Conference League before a league match against Everton.
Brentford, meanwhile, continue to struggle away from home, with just one point from eight road games. They now focus on their EFL Cup quarter-final against Newcastle and a league clash with Nottingham Forest.
Southampton 0 - 5 Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur bounced back with a dominant 5-0 win over Southampton at St. Mary’s, their first-ever five-goal first half in a Premier League match. James Maddison opened the scoring in the first minute, with Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski adding quickfire goals. Pape Sarr made it 4-0 in the 25th minute, and Maddison curled in a fifth just before halftime.
Southampton showed some fight in the second half, but Spurs had already sealed the win. Despite a late disallowed goal from Mateus Fernandes, the Saints remain bottom of the league, while Spurs move up to 10th, just five points off the top four.
Spurs dominated from the start, with Maddison playing a pivotal role in setting up goals for Son, Kulusevski, and Sarr. Though Southampton improved after the break, the match was effectively over by halftime, with the visitors putting on a show of clinical finishing. The win ends Spurs’ five-match winless streak, giving Ange Postecoglou’s team a much-needed confidence boost ahead of upcoming matches against Manchester United and Liverpool.
Arsenal 0 - 0 Everton
Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes took a blow as they were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Everton side at the Emirates. Jordan Pickford’s outstanding performance in goal and Everton’s solid defense frustrated the Gunners, who failed to break the deadlock despite several chances. Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka came closest, with Pickford denying both on multiple occasions.
Everton had the first major opportunity of the match, with Abdoulaye Doucoure’s shot blocked by Gabriel Magalhaes. Arsenal soon gained control, with Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli threatening, but Pickford was equal to their efforts, including a brilliant save from Saka’s volley early in the second half. A late penalty shout for a tackle on Thomas Partey was dismissed by VAR.
Arsenal took 13 shots but struggled to break down Everton’s defense, especially after key players Declan Rice and Odegaard were substituted. The draw leaves Arsenal in third, behind Liverpool and Chelsea, with little room for error in their pursuit of the title.
Everton, meanwhile, defended resolutely, with Pickford leading the way, and earned a valuable point in their fight to move away from relegation. Their defensive display was a stark contrast to their 4-0 defeat at Manchester United in the previous away match. Pickford’s performance, including multiple key saves, was crucial as Everton extended their unbeaten run to four matches.
Liverpool 2 - 2 Fulham
Ten-man Liverpool were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Fulham at Anfield, dropping Premier League points for only the third time this season. Despite being a man down for most of the match after Andrew Robertson’s red card, the Reds fought back twice to salvage a point, with Diogo Jota scoring a late equaliser.
Fulham took the lead in the 11th minute through Andreas Pereira’s volley, and Liverpool’s woes were compounded when Robertson was sent off for a foul on Harry Wilson. However, Liverpool came out strong in the second half, with Cody Gakpo scoring an early equaliser. Fulham regained the lead when Rodrigo Muniz capitalised on a deflection to score in the 76th minute, but Jota, returning from injury, swiftly leveled the score just six minutes after coming on. Both teams had chances to win it late on, but the match ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
Liverpool, on a nine-match home win streak, will be disappointed to drop points at home, especially after Robertson’s early mistakes and the red card. However, the team showed resilience to recover and earn a point. The draw leaves them five points clear at the top, with Chelsea set to close the gap with a win over Brentford.
Fulham, on the other hand, displayed courage and tactical discipline, holding their own against the league leaders. After taking the lead early, they were not discouraged by Liverpool’s fightback. Despite not being able to hold onto their second lead, the Cottagers will take heart from a solid performance, particularly from Pereira and Muniz. They remain in a strong position ahead of their next match against Southampton.
Newcastle 4 - 0 Leicester
Newcastle United ended their four-game winless streak with a dominant 4-0 victory over Leicester City at St. James’ Park. The Magpies struck early in the second half, with Jacob Murphy opening the scoring before Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak added quick-fire goals. Isak later assisted Murphy for his second, completing a one-sided victory.
Newcastle controlled the match from the start, with Murphy’s first-half finish giving them the lead. After the break, Guimaraes and Isak increased the lead, with Isak’s header taking a deflection. Murphy sealed the win with a second goal on the hour mark. The victory moves Newcastle to 11th, while Leicester remain in 16th.
Despite the heavy defeat, Leicester showed effort, with Stephy Mavididi and Kasey McAteer working hard to support the defense. However, they struggled to cope with Newcastle’s attacking strength. Up next for Leicester is a home match against Wolves, where they will look to bounce back.
Wolves 1 - 2 Ipswich Town
Jack Taylor scored a last-minute winner as Ipswich Town triumphed 2-1 over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, lifting them out of the relegation zone. The win came after a Matt Doherty own goal gave Ipswich a first-half lead, with Matheus Cunha equalising for Wolves in the 72nd minute. In stoppage time, Taylor headed in Jack Clarke’s corner to seal the victory for Ipswich.
The result moves Ipswich to 18th, just one point behind Crystal Palace, while Wolves remain 19th, four points from safety. Wolves’ poor set-piece defending once again cost them, having conceded 16 goals from set-pieces this season. Ipswich, who had been struggling, showed resilience to secure the win, with Taylor’s late goal lifting spirits ahead of their match with Newcastle.
Nottingham Forest 2 - 1 Aston Villa
Anthony Elanga came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Nottingham Forest beat Aston Villa 2-1, moving into fourth place in the Premier League. Villa had taken the lead in the 63rd minute through Jhon Duran’s header, but Forest equalised late with a powerful Nikola Milenkovic header. Elanga then netted the winner in the dying moments after a well-placed cross from Elliot Anderson.
The win lifted Forest to 28 points, ahead of Manchester City, while Villa remain in 6th, three points behind. Forest continued their strong home form, while Villa’s struggles on the road persisted. Duran was the standout for Villa, scoring a brilliant goal, but Villa’s defensive lapses proved costly in the end.
