Premier League 2024-25 GW20 Review

Wolves 0 - 3 Nottingham Forest

Molineux Stadium
Mon 06 January 2025

Nottingham Forest secured a 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, extending their winning streak to six Premier League matches. Morgan Gibbs-White opened the scoring early against his former side, and Chris Wood doubled the lead just before halftime. Taiwo Awoniyi sealed the win late on, following a set-up from James Ward-Prowse.

Wolves were left to rue missed chances, particularly from Jorgen Strand Larsen, who saw his efforts denied by goalkeeper Matz Sels. Forest’s clinical finishing and solid defense proved decisive, with Sels making crucial saves throughout the match. Wolves’ head coach Vitor Pereira suffered his first loss since taking charge, leaving his team in 17th place.

The win marked the 50th anniversary of Brian Clough’s appointment as Forest manager, and it was a fitting tribute as Forest moved level on points with Arsenal and just six behind league leaders Liverpool.

Fulham 2 - 2 Ipswich Town

Craven Cottage
Sun 05 January 2025

Fulham and Ipswich Town played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage, with Raul Jimenez scoring twice from the penalty spot to extend Fulham’s unbeaten run to eight matches. Ipswich took the lead late in the first half through Sam Szmodics after a Calvin Bassey mistake.

Jimenez equalized from the penalty spot in the 69th minute after a foul on Harry Wilson, but Ipswich regained the lead just two minutes later, with Liam Delap converting a penalty of his own. The drama continued in stoppage time when Leif Davis fouled Jimenez, allowing the Mexican striker to score his second penalty and secure a point for Fulham.

The draw leaves Fulham in ninth place, two points behind Aston Villa, while Ipswich remain in the relegation zone, still struggling to secure back-to-back wins. Fulham will need to turn more of their draws into victories if they are to challenge for European qualification, while Ipswich’s failure to hold onto a lead again highlights their ongoing struggles.

Liverpool 2 - 2 Manchester United

Sun 05 January 2025

Manchester United fought back to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield, ending their three-match losing streak. Despite Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion, which gave Liverpool a chance to extend their lead, United stunned the hosts in freezing conditions.

Lisandro Martinez’s strike gave United the lead in the 52nd minute, but Liverpool quickly responded through Cody Gakpo’s brilliant finish. Mohamed Salah then converted a penalty after Matthijs de Ligt’s handball, putting Liverpool ahead. However, United weren’t done yet, with Amad scoring the equalizer in the 80th minute after a fantastic assist from Alejandro Garnacho.

The draw lifts United to 13th in the table, ahead of West Ham United, while Liverpool remain six points clear at the top of the Premier League. United’s spirited performance at Anfield, capped by Amad’s vital goal, will provide optimism for manager Ruben Amorim, who will be relieved by the result after a challenging start to his tenure.

Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 2 Newcastle United

Sat 04 January 2025

Newcastle United extended their remarkable Premier League winning streak to five matches with a 2-1 comeback victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Alexander Isak’s continued red-hot form, combined with Anthony Gordon’s quick response, secured all three points for Eddie Howe’s side.

Tottenham took an early lead with Dominic Solanke’s excellent header in the fourth minute, but Newcastle responded just 140 seconds later when Gordon slotted home from a tight angle to level the score. Isak then capitalized on a defensive error by Spurs’ Radu Dragusin to put Newcastle ahead, scoring for a seventh consecutive league game and sealing a winning start to 2025.

The result boosts Newcastle to fifth in the Premier League, while Tottenham’s struggles continue, leaving them in 11th place after their tenth league defeat this season. The match showcased Newcastle’s resilience, with both Gordon and Isak shining in the attacking third. Despite a late surge from Spurs, including efforts from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison, they couldn’t find the equalizer, leaving them frustrated as they face a tough upcoming run.

Aston Villa 2 - 1 Leicester City

Sat 04 January 2025

Aston Villa secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Leicester City, with Leon Bailey’s late goal earning them all three points and lifting them to eighth in the Premier League standings.

The match began slowly, with few chances in the first half, but came to life after the break. Ross Barkley opened the scoring for Villa in the 58th minute, capitalizing on a clearance that fell to him on the edge of the box. Leicester responded quickly, with Stephy Mavididi making up for an earlier miss by firing in the equalizer from a rebound. However, Bailey restored Villa’s lead in the 76th minute, turning in a cross from Ian Maatsen to secure the win.

Leicester’s woes continued as they remain in 19th place, two points behind 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite a spirited second-half performance, the Foxes’ defensive frailties were exposed, with poor defending leading to both Villa goals. Villa, though hindered by injuries and suspensions, showed resilience and are now in a stronger position for the rest of the season.

Bournemouth 1 - 0 Everton

Vitality Stadium
Sat 04 January 2025
David Brooks scored the only goal as AFC Bournemouth secured a 1-0 victory over Everton, maintaining pressure on the Premier League’s top four.

Brooks, who came off the bench, volleyed home a cross from Milos Kerkez in the 77th minute to break the deadlock after a frustrating afternoon for the Cherries, who had struggled to break down Everton’s defense. Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, Bournemouth had to wait until late in the match to get the decisive goal. The win extended their unbeaten run to a club-record eight Premier League games, moving them up to seventh and within three points of fourth-place Chelsea.

Everton, who remain 16th, struggled to find any attacking rhythm and failed to register a shot on target. Abdoulaye Doucoure came close to equalizing late, but his volley went wide. The defeat marks a second straight loss for the Toffees, who face a tough run of fixtures ahead, with their relegation worries growing as they sit just two points above the relegation zone.

Crystal Palace 1 - 1 Chelsea

Selhurst Park
Sat 04 January 2025

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a late equaliser for Crystal Palace as they held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw, extending Chelsea’s winless run in the Premier League to four matches.

Cole Palmer had given Chelsea the lead early on, firing home his 13th league goal of the season after a brilliant run and assist from Jadon Sancho. Despite dominating much of the game, Chelsea failed to convert further chances, with Nicolas Jackson and Josh Acheampong among those unable to increase their advantage.

Mateta, who had been Palace’s most dangerous player, found the equaliser in the 82nd minute, converting a pass from Eberechi Eze following a slick move that also involved Ismaila Sarr. The draw sees Palace move six points clear of the relegation zone, while Chelsea remain fourth, just one point ahead of in-form Newcastle United.

Palace struggled in the first half but grew into the game in the second, creating more chances as the match went on. Manager Oliver Glasner will be pleased with his side’s resilience, especially given their recent positive results, which have helped them distance themselves from the relegation battle.

For Chelsea, the draw was another frustrating result, but manager Enzo Maresca will be encouraged by their overall performance, particularly the play of Acheampong, who impressed in his first Premier League start. Maresca will be hoping for a win in Chelsea’s upcoming home games against AFC Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers to end their winless run.

Manchester City 4 - 1 West Ham

Sat 04 January 2025

Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City defeated West Ham 4-1, securing back-to-back Premier League wins. Haaland’s goals came either side of halftime, with Savinho providing two assists. The match saw an early own goal from Vladimir Coufal and a late consolation for West Ham from Niclas Fullkrug.

City controlled the match, with Haaland’s first goal coming from a Savinho cross and his second from a delicate finish. Foden added a fourth after a defensive error. West Ham, missing key player Jarrod Bowen, struggled to create chances and remain in 13th place.

City stay in sixth, two points behind the top four, while West Ham look to bounce back in upcoming matches.

Southampton 0 - 5 Brentford

St Mary’s Stadium
Sat 04 January 2025

Brentford secured their first away win of the season with a dominant 5-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s. Kevin Schade gave them an early lead, followed by Bryan Mbeumo’s brilliant finish and penalty. Sepp van den Berg’s header was disallowed after a VAR review, but the Bees pushed on, with goals from Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoane Wissa sealing the win in stoppage time.

Southampton, bottom of the table, struggled defensively and remain without a win under new manager Ivan Juric. Brentford move up to 10th and will look to build on this performance in the FA Cup against Plymouth Argyle.

Brighton 1 - 1 Arsenal

American Express Stadium
Sat 04 January 2025

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton, missing the chance to close the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool. Teenager Ethan Nwaneri gave the Gunners the lead with a solo effort in the 16th minute, but Brighton equalized when Joao Pedro converted a penalty after being fouled by William Saliba.

Despite a late push by Brighton, Arsenal’s unbeaten league run stretched to 10 matches. Arsenal sit five points behind Liverpool in second, while Brighton are 10th and without a league win since November 23.

Arsenal were missing key players, including Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz, and their defensive frailties allowed Brighton to capitalize on a penalty and nearly snatch a late winner.
