Premier League 2024-25 GW8 Review

Nottingham Forest 1 - 0 Crystal Palace

The City Ground
Mon 21 October 2024

Nottingham Forest secured their first home victory since April with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Monday night, thanks to Chris Wood’s fifth goal of the season. Despite a spirited performance from Oliver Glasner’s Palace side, the defeat marked their eighth consecutive league match without a win.

The first half was lively, with both teams hitting the woodwork and Wood missing a couple of golden chances. Eberechi Eze came close for Palace early on, steering a shot narrowly wide, while Wood had a header cleared off the line. At the other end, Eddie Nketiah’s long-range strike clipped the outside of the post, and Ryan Yates also saw his looping header hit the woodwork.

After the break, Forest’s Matz Sels made a spectacular save, tipping Eze’s fierce 30-yard drive onto the crossbar. However, the breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Wood’s right-footed effort slipped under Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who was visibly frustrated as the ball found the net. Sels continued to shine, pushing away a late curling effort from Jeffrey Schlupp to preserve the lead.

Despite showing attacking intent, Palace struggled to convert their chances, with Nketiah and Daichi Kamada both missing key opportunities. With the win, Forest climbed to eighth in the table, while Palace remained in 18th, desperate for a turnaround as they prepare for a challenging match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Wolves 1 - 2 Manchester City

Molineux Stadium
Sun 20 October 2024

John Stones’ last-gasp header secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Manchester City at Wolverhampton Wanderers, continuing their impressive unbeaten streak in the league. The hosts made a strong start, taking the lead in the seventh minute through Jorgen Strand Larsen, who finished brilliantly from Nelson Semedo’s cross.

City responded with pressure, and Josko Gvardiol leveled the score in the 33rd minute with a stunning 20-yard strike into the top corner. Despite a series of chances, including a superb save from Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa to deny Bernardo Silva, the teams remained deadlocked until stoppage time.

In the fifth minute of added time, Stones rose to meet a corner from substitute Phil Foden and powered a header into the net. Initially disallowed for offside due to Silva’s positioning, VAR intervened, confirming that Silva did not obstruct the goalkeeper’s view, leading to the referee overturning his decision and awarding the goal.

The victory brings City to 20 points, just one behind Liverpool, while Wolves find themselves at the bottom of the table after a disappointing start to the season, failing to secure a win in their first seven matches. Stones’ late heroics highlighted City’s resilience, as they continue to establish themselves as comeback kings this season, setting a new club record with their 31-match unbeaten league streak.

Liverpool 2 - 1 Chelsea

Sun 20 October 2024

Liverpool climbed back to the top of the Premier League table with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield, thanks to a decisive goal from Curtis Jones. The win came after Manchester City had briefly taken the lead earlier in the day, adding pressure on the hosts to deliver against a formidable opponent.

The match began with a penalty awarded to Liverpool after Levi Colwill fouled Jones in the box, allowing Mohamed Salah to convert from the spot in the 29th minute. Chelsea responded positively, with Nicolas Jackson leveling the score shortly after halftime, slotting home a through-ball from Moises Caicedo after a VAR review confirmed he was onside.

However, the parity was short-lived. Just three minutes later, Salah provided a superb cross that found Jones at the far post, and he made no mistake in prodding it past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Despite some late efforts from Chelsea substitutes, Liverpool held on to secure the three points.

The victory extends Liverpool’s lead over Manchester City to one point and places them four points clear of their next opponents, Arsenal. Chelsea remains sixth in the table, three points off the top four, but manager Enzo Maresca can take positives from the performance, particularly with captain Reece James returning from injury and the promising displays from midfielders Lavia and Caicedo.

As Liverpool prepares for upcoming matches against direct rivals, this win sends a clear message of their title ambitions.

Tottenham Hotspur 4 - 1 West Ham

Sat 19 October 2024

Tottenham Hotspur rebounded from a disappointing defeat with a commanding 4-1 victory over West Ham United, scoring three goals in just eight minutes during a dominant second half.

West Ham took the lead in the 18th minute through Mohammed Kudus, but Spurs equalized just before halftime when Dejan Kulusevski’s shot hit both posts and crossed the line.

A halftime tactical switch by manager Ange Postecoglou saw James Maddison replaced by Pape Sarr, which paid off as Yves Bissouma netted in the 52nd minute. Moments later, an unfortunate own goal from West Ham’s Alphonse Areola followed a deflected shot from Son Heung-min, who then capped off the scoring in the 60th minute.

West Ham’s woes increased when Kudus was sent off for violent conduct, leaving the Hammers at the bottom of the table with just eight points. Meanwhile, Spurs climbed to seventh place with 13 points and will look to carry this momentum into their next match against Crystal Palace.

Fulham 1 - 3 Aston Villa

Craven Cottage
Sat 19 October 2024

Aston Villa climbed back into the Premier League’s top four with a 3-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage, overcoming an early setback in an entertaining match that saw both teams finish with ten men.

Fulham took the lead in the fifth minute when Raul Jimenez drilled a shot past Emiliano Martinez after capitalizing on a long kick from goalkeeper Bernd Leno. However, Villa equalized just four minutes later, as Morgan Rogers’ shot was deflected by Calvin Bassey to wrong-foot Leno.

Fulham had chances to regain the lead but squandered opportunities, with Jimenez heading wide and Andreas Pereira having a penalty saved by Martinez. Villa took control in the second half, with Ollie Watkins heading in a corner from Youri Tielemans to put them ahead in the 58th minute. Fulham’s hopes were further dashed when Joachim Andersen received a straight red card for a foul on Watkins.

Issa Diop’s own goal in the 69th minute sealed the victory for Villa, despite substitute Jaden Philogene’s late red card for two bookings. With this win, Villa moved up to fourth in the league table with 17 points, while Fulham dropped to ninth after suffering their second consecutive defeat.

Fulham will need to regroup quickly ahead of their trip to Everton, while Villa will look to maintain their momentum in upcoming fixtures, including a crucial clash against Tottenham Hotspur on November 3.

Manchester United 2 - 1 Brentford

Sat 19 October 2024

Rasmus Hojlund’s first Premier League goal of the season helped Manchester United secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Brentford, easing pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

Brentford took the lead just before halftime, with Ethan Pinnock heading in a corner from Mikkel Damsgaard. However, United equalized two minutes into the second half through Alejandro Garnacho, who volleyed home a cross from Marcus Rashford. The hosts continued to apply pressure, and Hojlund scored the winner shortly after the hour mark, lobbing the ball over Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken after a clever backheel from Bruno Fernandes.

With the victory, United climbed into the top half of the table with 11 points from eight matches, while Brentford remained in 12th place, one point behind.

United’s performance was marked by individual brilliance in the second half, particularly Garnacho’s stunning equalizer and Fernandes’ assist. As they prepare for upcoming fixtures against West Ham, Leicester City, and Chelsea, Ten Hag will hope this win can spark a turnaround in their season.

Brentford, on the other hand, continued to struggle after conceding a lead, having dropped 11 points from winning positions this season. Manager Thomas Frank will be eager to rectify this as they face Ipswich Town next week.

Newcastle 0 - 1 Brighton

St James’ Park
Sat 19 October 2024
Danny Welbeck’s goal secured a crucial 1-0 victory for Brighton & Hove Albion against Newcastle United, bringing the Seagulls within striking distance of the Premier League’s top four.

Brighton, fresh from a thrilling 3-2 win over Tottenham, capitalized on Newcastle’s defensive lapses. Welbeck opened the scoring in the 35th minute after a clever one-two with Georginio Rutter. Despite Newcastle’s early threats, including a one-on-one chance for Alexander Isak saved by Bart Verbruggen, they couldn’t find the net.

Verbruggen continued his stellar performance, denying Anthony Gordon and later preventing a late goal from Dan Burn that was ruled offside. Brighton’s victory was marred by Welbeck leaving the pitch on a stretcher late in the match after a clash with Fabian Schar.

Newcastle’s inability to convert chances left them winless in four league matches, sitting eighth in the table. Despite Isak’s return to the lineup, the hosts struggled in front of goal and must improve as they prepare for their next match against Chelsea.

Brighton moved up to fifth place, just two points off the top four, showing resilience in a game that was a departure from their usual attacking style. They will look to build on this performance in their upcoming fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Southampton 2 - 3 Leicester

St Mary’s Stadium
Sat 19 October 2024

In a thrilling encounter at St Mary’s Stadium, Jordan Ayew’s last-minute goal sealed a stunning comeback for Leicester City as they defeated 10-man Southampton 3-2. The hosts got off to a flying start, with Cameron Archer opening the scoring in the 8th minute, followed by Joe Aribo doubling their lead just before the half-hour mark. Leicester struggled early on but found their footing in the second half, with Facundo Buonanotte scoring to give them hope in the 64th minute.

The game took a dramatic turn when Ryan Fraser was sent off for a foul on Jamie Vardy, who converted the subsequent penalty to level the match. In a nail-biting finish, Ayew drove a low shot into the bottom corner in the 98th minute, securing back-to-back wins for the Foxes, who climbed to 14th in the table. Meanwhile, Southampton remains at the bottom, still searching for their first Premier League win of the season.

Ipswich Town 0 - 2 Everton

Portman Road
Sat 19 October 2024
Everton extended their unbeaten Premier League streak to four matches with a convincing 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Sean Dyche’s side wasted no time finding their rhythm after the international break, with Iliman Ndiaye scoring the opener in the 17th minute after capitalizing on a defensive error. Michael Keane doubled the lead just before halftime, finishing from a tight angle following a setup from Dwight McNeil.

Ipswich had a penalty awarded but it was overturned by VAR, which only added to their frustration. Despite a more spirited performance in the second half, Ipswich could not break through a solid Everton defense, with Jordan Pickford remaining largely untroubled. Conor Chaplin’s late effort was their best chance, but it was comfortably saved. Everton remain in 16th place, four points clear of the struggling Ipswich, who are still searching for their first win of the season.

Bournemouth 2 - 0 Arsenal

Vitality Stadium
Sat 19 October 2024

Bournemouth handed Arsenal their first Premier League defeat of the season with a 2-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium, capitalizing on the Gunners’ struggles after William Saliba was sent off in the 30th minute. Ryan Christie broke the deadlock in the 70th minute, firing a precise shot into the top corner, before Justin Kluivert sealed the win with a penalty shortly after, following a foul by Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya.

Despite a cautious start to the match, Arsenal failed to create significant chances, missing the influence of injured star Bukayo Saka. Bournemouth, buoyed by their numerical advantage, had several opportunities but struggled to convert until Christie’s goal. This result lifts Bournemouth to 10th in the league, while Arsenal remains in third place, missing the chance to go top. Mikel Arteta’s side will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for a crucial clash against Liverpool in their next outing.
