Premier League 2024-25 GW9 Review
Chelsea 2 - 1 Newcastle United
Cole Palmer led Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, lifting the Blues to fifth in the Premier League. After an early strike from Palmer was disallowed for offside, he played a key pass to set up Nicolas Jackson’s 18th-minute opener. Alexander Isak then equalized for Newcastle, converting a cross from former Chelsea player Lewis Hall.
Just after halftime, Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead with a low shot at Nick Pope’s near post. Chelsea nearly sealed the win when Christopher Nkunku was brought down in the box, but the penalty was overturned by VAR. Reece James impressed in defense, making crucial blocks as Chelsea secured the win, moving five points ahead of 12th-placed Newcastle.
Crystal Palace 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur
Despite Brennan Johnson hitting the post for Spurs, Palace controlled much of the game. Eze had a second-half goal disallowed for offside, and Adam Wharton saw a powerful shot saved by Guglielmo Vicario. Palace’s victory lifts them to 17th in the table, while Spurs slip to eighth, now facing two losses in their last three league games.
West Ham 2 - 1 Manchester United
Jarrod Bowen’s stoppage-time penalty sealed a 2-1 win for West Ham over Manchester United, heaping more pressure on Erik ten Hag. Bowen converted from the spot in the second minute of added time after VAR awarded the penalty for Matthijs de Ligt’s foul on Danny Ings.
Crysencio Summerville had put West Ham ahead in the 74th minute, capitalizing on United’s missed chances, but Casemiro’s close-range header equalized seven minutes later. Despite hitting the woodwork twice and dominating early on, United couldn’t capitalize, and Bowen’s late penalty lifted West Ham to 13th, dropping United to 14th in the table.
Arsenal 1 - 3 Liverpool
Saka put Arsenal ahead in the ninth minute, clinically finishing a long ball from Ben White after turning Andrew Robertson at the near post. Liverpool responded through Van Dijk, who capitalized on a Luis Diaz flick from a corner to nod in the equalizer. However, Merino restored Arsenal’s lead just before halftime, heading in a perfectly whipped free-kick from Declan Rice.
Liverpool gained momentum as Arsenal suffered defensive setbacks, with Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber both forced off through injury. Arsenal’s restructured defense eventually cracked, allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to thread a precise pass to Darwin Nunez, who set up Salah for the equalizer.
The result sees Liverpool maintain second place, trailing Manchester City by a single point, while Arsenal slip to third, five points off the pace
Aston Villa 1 - 1 AFC Bournemouth
Evanilson’s dramatic 96th-minute header secured a 1-1 draw for Bournemouth against Aston Villa at Villa Park, capping a thrilling finale in which the Cherries snatched a point after a game dominated by the hosts. Villa had finally broken the deadlock in the 76th minute with a goal from substitute Ross Barkley, but Bournemouth’s resilience paid off in stoppage time, denying Unai Emery’s side a valuable win.
Aston Villa had controlled much of the match, with Bournemouth’s stand-in goalkeeper Mark Travers making several outstanding saves to keep the game scoreless. Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans, and Amadou Onana were all denied by Travers’ heroics, while John McGinn had a first-half goal disallowed after VAR ruled that Watkins had taken the ball out of play in the build-up.
Villa’s persistence was eventually rewarded when Ian Maatsen’s cross was headed back by Leon Bailey for Barkley to slot home. However, Bournemouth refused to give in, and in the final seconds, Evanilson rose to glance home Marcus Tavernier’s free-kick, snatching a point for Andoni Iraola’s side.
The draw leaves Villa in third, five points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, while Bournemouth, currently 10th, continue to demonstrate their fighting spirit in Iraola’s first Premier League campaign.
Brentford 4 - 3 Ipswich Town
Bryan Mbeumo’s late goal secured a thrilling 4-3 victory for Brentford against 10-man Ipswich Town at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Ipswich took a 2-0 lead with quick goals from Sam Szmodics and George Hirst. However, Brentford struck back before halftime with Yoane Wissa’s goal and an own goal by Harry Clarke. Mbeumo converted a penalty early in the second half to give Brentford a 3-2 lead before Clarke was sent off.
Liam Delap equalized for Ipswich in the 86th minute, but Mbeumo netted again deep into stoppage time to clinch the win. The result lifts Brentford to ninth, while Ipswich remains 16th, still seeking their first victory.
Brighton 2 - 2 Wolves
Matheus Cunha’s stoppage-time goal completed a stunning comeback for Wolverhampton Wanderers in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Wolves trailed 2-0 with just five minutes remaining, having seen Danny Welbeck score right before halftime and Evan Ferguson double the lead in the 85th minute. However, Rayan Ait-Nouri sparked hope with a goal in the 88th minute, and Cunha netted the equalizer moments later to secure a point for Wolves.
Brighton sits fifth in the Premier League, while Wolves move up to 19th, still winless after nine games. The match highlighted Wolves’ resilience as they fought back from the brink, showcasing their determination under manager Gary O’Neil.
Manchester City 1 - 0 Southampton
Erling Haaland’s early goal secured a 1-0 victory for Manchester City against Southampton at the Etihad Stadium, allowing City to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League.
Haaland found the net just five minutes in, converting Matheus Nunes’ cross with a clinical finish. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, City struggled to extend their lead. Southampton nearly equalized just before halftime when Cameron Archer’s strike hit the crossbar.
After the break, Haaland missed several opportunities to make the scoreline more comfortable, including a header cleared off the line and a shot saved by Aaron Ramsdale. Southampton’s Adam Armstrong also came close, but City held on for the win.
While City maintained their position at the top of the table ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool, Southampton remained rooted to the bottom with just one point from nine games. Despite the defeat, Southampton’s possession-based approach under Russell Martin showed promise, but they must start converting their efforts into results if they are to climb the standings.
Everton 1 - 1 Fulham
Beto’s stoppage-time equalizer salvaged a point for Everton in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Fulham at Goodison Park. The substitute’s late intervention extended the hosts’ unbeaten run to five Premier League matches, while Fulham, despite a dominant performance, had to settle for a draw.
Fulham took the lead in the 61st minute when Alex Iwobi capitalized on Emile Smith Rowe’s excellent build-up play to fire a low shot into the corner. Everton had previously seen a goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin ruled out for offside in the first half after Idrissa Gueye struck the crossbar.
As the match drew to a close, Fulham’s failure to secure a second goal came back to haunt them. In the 94th minute, Ashley Young cushioned a cross back to Beto, who headed home to equalize.
While Fulham sits 10th in the standings, Everton climbs to 15th with nine points, showcasing their resilience in securing a vital draw.
Leicester City 1 - 3 Nottingham Forest
Chris Wood was the star of the show as Nottingham Forest secured a 3-1 victory over Leicester City in the East Midlands derby, lifting them to fifth place in the Premier League.
Ryan Yates opened the scoring for Forest in the 16th minute, capitalizing on Leicester’s defensive mishaps to curl a shot past Mads Hermansen. However, Leicester equalized shortly after, with Jamie Vardy finishing a well-worked move to notch his 194th goal for the Foxes.
Forest regained control early in the second half, with Wood showcasing his fine form by turning on the edge of the box to fire home in the 47th minute. He then doubled his tally just after the hour mark, heading in from a defensive error by Wout Faes.
Despite a promising start to the season, Leicester’s inability to defend proved costly, while Wood’s two goals confirmed his status as a key player for Forest, now just a point off the top four.
