Premier League 2025-26 GW8 Review
West Ham United v Brentford
To be played: Monday 20 October @ 20:00
Liverpool 1 - 2 Manchester United
Liverpool’s poor run continued in Gameweek 8 as Manchester United earned a 2-1 victory at Anfield. Bryan Mbeumo struck early after a defensive error, before Cody Gakpo levelled late on following multiple near misses. However, Harry Maguire’s decisive header from a Bruno Fernandes cross sealed the win, lifting United to ninth and leaving fourth-placed Liverpool reeling from a fourth straight defeat in all competitions.
Upcoming Fixtures
Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 2 Aston Villa
Aston Villa came from behind to stun Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Rodrigo Bentancur opened the scoring early with his first Premier League goal of 2025, but Morgan Rogers equalised before the break with a superb long-range strike. Substitute Emiliano Buendia then sealed the win in the 77th minute with a brilliant curling finish. Despite Brennan Johnson’s late miss, Villa held firm to climb to 10th in the table, just two points behind sixth-placed Spurs.
Upcoming Fixtures
Fulham 0 - 1 Arsenal
Leandro Trossard’s first Premier League goal of the season earned Arsenal a 1-0 win at Fulham, sending them back to the top of the table. After Manchester City briefly overtook them earlier in the day, the Gunners responded as Trossard struck in the 58th minute from a clever corner routine. Riccardo Calafiori had an earlier effort ruled out for offside, while a late penalty shout for Bukayo Saka was overturned by VAR. Arsenal comfortably held on to move three points clear, leaving Fulham 14th after a third consecutive defeat.
Sunderland 2 - 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Sunderland cruised to a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Stadium of Light, extending the visitors’ winless start to the season. Nordi Mukiele opened the scoring after 16 minutes with a slick one-two involving Trai Hume, capping a dominant first-half display. Wolves struggled to respond, wasting several chances through Joao Gomes, before an own goal in stoppage time sealed their fate. The win moves Sunderland up to seventh, level on points with Chelsea and Tottenham, while Wolves stay bottom and without a victory.
Manchester City 2 - 0 Everton
Erling Haaland’s incredible scoring streak continued as his quickfire brace secured Manchester City a 2-0 win over Everton at the Etihad Stadium. After a quiet first half in which Beto missed a huge chance for the visitors, City took charge after the break. Haaland headed in Nico O’Reilly’s cross before adding a composed second moments later to reach 96 Premier League goals. Jordan Pickford denied him a hat-trick late on, as City climbed to second and Everton slipped to 10th.
Upcoming Fixtures
Crystal Palace 3 - 3 Bournemouth
Jean-Philippe Mateta’s second-half hat-trick earned Crystal Palace a dramatic 3-3 draw with AFC Bournemouth at Selhurst Park. Eli Kroupi’s first-half brace had given Bournemouth a 2-0 lead, but Mateta struck twice to level the scores before Ryan Christie appeared to snatch victory for the visitors in the 89th minute. However, Mateta calmly converted a stoppage-time penalty to complete his treble and secure a point. The result leaves Bournemouth fourth on 15 points, with Palace two points behind in eighth.
Burnley 2 - 0 Leeds United
Loum Tchaouna’s spectacular long-range strike sealed Burnley’s 2-0 win over Leeds United, lifting the Clarets out of the relegation zone. Lesley Ugochukwu had put Burnley ahead early with a header from Kyle Walker’s cross, and Tchaouna doubled the lead in the 68th minute with a 30-yard beauty. Despite heavy pressure from Leeds, Burnley held on for just their second Premier League win of the season, moving up to 17th, one point behind 15th-placed Nottingham Forest.
Brighton 2 - 1 Newcastle United
Danny Welbeck struck twice to give Brighton & Hove Albion a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at the Amex Stadium. Welbeck opened the scoring in the 41st minute, and despite Nick Woltemade’s backheel equaliser for Newcastle, the veteran striker curled home a second eight minutes from time to secure victory. The result lifts Brighton into ninth, while Newcastle remain 12th, still searching for their first away win of the season.
Nottingham Forest 0 - 3 Chelsea
Chelsea defeated Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the City Ground, ending Ange Postecoglou’s short 39-day tenure as manager. Josh Acheampong opened the scoring with his first Premier League goal, assisted by Pedro Neto, who then added a second, before Reece James sealed the win. Malo Gusto was sent off late, leaving Forest 17th on five points and searching for a new manager, while Chelsea climbed to fourth with consecutive victories.
