A Journey Through Time: The Showdown History

Before establishing their signature event, Saracens frequently participated in the London Double Header at Twickenham Stadium from 2004 to 2017. In the 2009–10 season, the club opted to stage three Premiership home games and an exhibition match against South Africa at Wembley Stadium to bolster fan attendance.

The event transitioned to an annual occurrence, formally branded as ‘Derby Day’ in 2012, featuring local rivals Harlequins as regular opponents. From 2012 to 2015, this fixture set the world record for club rugby attendance three times. Following eight years at Wembley Stadium, Derby Day moved to the London Stadium in 2018 and 2019.

In 2019, Saracens announced a five-year stadium partnership with Tottenham Hotspur to host annual fixtures at the Premier League club’s ground under the banner of ‘The Showdown’. The inaugural match was scheduled for March 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to games being played behind closed doors when the league resumed. Full-capacity crowds returned at the beginning of the 2021–22 season, allowing Saracens to finally hold their first game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in March 2022 against Bristol Bears. The fixture then resumed its regular rivalry with Harlequins from 2023 onwards, now looking to host another showdown in 2024, fans can expect a thrilling spectacle with exclusive The Showdown Hospitality Packages.
